ACT I: Five Years and What Comes Next

ACT I: Five Years and What Comes Next

There's a theatre term for the moment just before a show begins: "places." It's the stage manager's call that stops everything else and focuses the room. The lights haven't moved yet. The audience doesn't know what's coming. But the people making the show happen are ready.

That's where merch. - or is it MerchDot - has spent five years getting to.

Five Years at 1650 Broadway

merch. was born in 2021 — but not in an office. The first year happened in a living room and a conference room. No lease, no suite number, no address to put on a business card. Just someone with a vision, a collaborator who believed in it, and whatever space was available that week.

Our honest origin story. The people who build shows understand this intuitively. You don't wait for the ideal room. You hold auditions in a church basement, you rehearse in a borrowed studio, you make it work with what you have until you've earned something better. That's what year one of merch. looked like.

The office at 51st and Broadway came in year two. And in the years since, we've worked with more than twenty productions, put our designs in the hands of fans in forty-nine states (and a handful of countries), and built something that had never existed before: Broadway's first Black-owned merchandise agency.

But the work that matters most is what we're doing next.

This year, we moved our warehouse operations to New Jersey — faster fulfillment, more capacity, closer logistics for the tours and productions we serve. Our Headquarters has always been in Times Square. Our warehouse is now minutes from the Holland Tunnel.

Why This Anniversary Means Something Different

Most agencies mark five years with a party and a press release. We're marking ours with a launch. Theatre Club — a theatre-inspired label, the one that's been developing in the background for over a year — is officially open as the primary face of this company. Not a side project. Not a collection. The brand.

The theatre world runs on relationships and timing. A faster fulfillment window — we're now talking 24 to 48 hours to a Manhattan address — means that when a production sells out of a shirt first preview, the restocked item is back in the theatre before show two. It means when a producer wants to see what a custom Theatre Club capsule could look like for their cast and crew, we can sit across the table from them the next morning.

What's Changing — And What's Coming

We are still the same company, built on the same mission: to be the premier merchandise and lifestyle brand for the Broadway community, from the crew to the ingenue. What changes now is the scale at which we deliver on that.

In six and a half weeks, the Maybe Happy Ending national tour opens. It's our first national tour, operated independently by MerchDot — a milestone that's been years in the making.

  • Faster fulfillment for every order — consumer and wholesale
  • Deeper production partnerships with shows and tours operating in and around New York
  • In-person access for producers, company managers, and brand partners
  • The beginning of something new — dotMedia, our content and creative arm, is coming

The Theatre Club Requisite Collection is live now. The Crew Collection drops this fall. The Hillman Collection arrives in February. And dotMedia — our content and creative arm — is being introduced to the world this year through the videos, the editorial, and everything you're reading right now.

What's Next

Beginning over the the next several weeks, we'll start publishing a full retrospective series on the shows we've worked with since 2021. Each post goes into the real story of a production — the design decisions, the challenges, the community. Alongside that, we're introducing Theatre Club through the blog, through the newsletter, and through our social channels.

This is Act Two. And you're in the front row.
